In July 2019, Frenchman Ivan Deyra won his first WSOP bracelet. 'To win it, it's amazing. It's like a dream!' he told reporters afterwards.

Now, that dream has become a nightmare in a stunning fall from grace for the former WSOP champion.

As first reported by PokerNews France, Deyra pocketed €83,300 (~$101,000) after winning the €2,000 Super High Roller in the recent Winamax Series. The only problem was that he used his father's account after busting with his own.

First Reports of Deyra Incident

News of the incident was first picked up by French poker forum Club Poker in a thread that spanned some 30 pages inside two days. Participants in the tournament had reported refunds to their account, with fifth-place finisher 'MAMARAZZI' reimbursed for over €5,000.

Others noted that Deyra hadn't played on his personal account since Jan. 6, two days after the tournament took place, and that the Frenchman also did not play in any of the Day 2s for Winamax Series tournaments he'd already qualified for.

Finally, internet sleuths discovered that the name of the winning account 'MATIVANAO' was compiled of the first names of Deyra's brothers and sisters.

Deyra Releases Statement

Faced with overwhelming evidence, Deyra released a statement confirming that he indeed played the Super High Roller on two accounts, winning on his father's account, with Winamax banning both accounts. The €83,300 from the Super High Roller win, along with prize money from two other tournaments Deyra cashed in, were subsequently redistributed to affected players.

'Today, with hindsight I recognize the cheating aspect of multi-accounting'

As a result, his contract with Winamax, which was due to expire in June, has been terminated immediately.

In the statement, Deyra cuts a contrite and disconsolate figure, saying his punishment was 'heavy, very heavy' but also 'logical and understandable.'

'Neither [Winamax] nor I would have wanted this but it is so. Today, with hindsight I recognize the cheating aspect of multi-accounting.

'How could I have been so naive or oblivious? For the days and nights that follow, I am searching within myself to dig into the reasons for this unforgivable and serious act.'

Deyra goes on to apologize to Winamax, his fellow Team Pros, other players and the entire poker community for potentially jeopardizing their image, or the image of the game we all love.

Why Did He Do It?

Before his statement, many had speculated as to the reasons why Deyra would cheat. With close to $1.4m in lifetime earnings according to The Hendon Mob, Deyra was part of a group of Winamax Team Pros that featured fellow WSOP bracelet winners Adrian Mateos, Joao Vieira, and Davidi Kitai.

Deyra says that he has immense gratitude towards the team and staff at Winamax during his three and a half year stint as a Team Pro, but also explains why he chose to cheat.

'In the past, I realized when doing my finances that on Winamax I hadn't been making money for three years, since I became a Team Pro. After asking myself several questions about my game [...] I came up with a theory. Players change nicknames every six months. All the information that I collect on their play disappears at this time, but the reverse is not true since I keep the same nickname.'

By playing under another nickname, Deyra said that he wanted to see the difference for himself and check whether his hypothesis was true or not - that players knew who he was and how he played. Unfortunately for him, in doing so he got himself banned.

What Now?

Despite the setback, Deyra says his career is 'far from over' and instead he will 'grow and learn' from this incident.

'I have given all my energy and passion for poker, through blogs, strategy videos, deep runs, my dreams, my set backs and team spirit, every since my first day as a pro. I will continue to share this with you until the end.'

The 50th Anniversary World Series of Poker is going to be a big summer series as the normal series of tournaments is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone. Players get excited about the WSOP each year anyway, but the 2019 WSOP is going to bring more action and special events.

And this year’s events, the World Series executives have decided to tease bits of the schedule as they put it together so the excitement is felt in waves.

The initial announcement of front and end dates, Main Event dates, and a few special events came just before Christmas in December. A few weeks later, another 13 events were added to the schedule. And just last week, the details were released regarding nearly two dozen high buy-in events for the summer.

This week’s announcement is all about chips and big blind antes, while more events are also put into the schedule. It’s not complete yet, but the 2019 WSOP is getting there.

Chips, Everyone, Chips!

All players at every level of the game like having more chips to start a tournament. Most tournaments have always offered a starting stack of chips commensurate with the buy-in, i.e. $1,500 buy-ins award 1,500 chips, but tournament organizers have lately been increasing the number of chips. Some of the events are called deepstacks or megastacks, but they always involve more starting chips.

This year, the WSOP is doing it for almost every event, even more than in the past. Last year, a $1,500 buy-in NLHE tournament gave players 7,500 chips, but this year, that same buy-in will allow a 25,000-chip starting stack.

While that can be recalculated for most NLHE events according to buy-ins, the same formula won’t apply to other poker variations. But to clarify, the WSOP posted this information for a range of buy-ins that will apply to bracelet events and mega satellites:

$400 Colossus: 40,000 chips

Big Blind Antes for Everyone

The new trend in poker has become so popular that it’s taking over the WSOP. All NLHE tournaments this summer will use the big blind ante format, in which the player in the big blind pays the ante for everyone at the table. As the big blind rotates around the table, so does that responsibility.

Yes, you pay the ante once per orbit now instead of once per hand. Ante will be equivalent to big blind amount. So if blinds 100-200, big blind would be putting in 200 for blind and 200 for ante, 400 total. If you ante every hand 9-handed with 25 ante, you would put in 225

Big blind antes will be used in all Daily Deepstack events and mega satellites as well.

The use of this format encourages a faster pace in the games and helps avoid confusion between dealers and players with regard to tossing in an ante on every hand. Players were widely accepting of the format when used at the 2018 WSOP and 2018 WSOP Europe, as well as in other major tournament series around the world.

According to WSOP Vice President Jack Effel, “It is important the modern-day World Series of Poker continues to evolve. People certainly like bigger starting stacks, and we’re happy to oblige while simultaneously adding more value.

Some events have already been announced to help the WSOP and its players celebrate the big 5-0. For example, the series will kick off with the Big 50 on opening weekend, the $500 buy-in event with a $5 million guarantee.

Another tournament is now on the schedule. The Bracelet Winners Only will be a NLHE tournament starting on Wednesday, July 10, and four days are designated for it. The $1,500 buy-in event will offer a 50K starting stack, as mentioned above. Registration is limited to players who have won a bracelet in any of the past 50 years, of which there are 1,078 names. Players who win a bracelet prior to July 10 of this summer can also enter.
